Glow sticks are small, sealed plastic tubes that produce light through a chemical reaction called chemiluminescence. Inside each stick are two separate substances—usually a hydrogen peroxide solution and a fluorescent dye with a separate activating chemical. When the stick is bent, an internal glass vial breaks, allowing the chemicals to mix and produce a glowing effect.
They don’t require batteries or electricity and typically glow in colors like green, blue, pink, yellow, or orange. The light is soft and non-heat-producing, making glow sticks safe for short-term use in dark environments.
Common uses include:
Festivals and concerts
Parties and celebrations
Emergency lighting
Camping and night activities
Safety marking for visibility at night
The glow usually lasts from a few hours up to around 12 hours, gradually fading as the chemical reaction slows down.
